After the RA wrote up the Carmens, they cooled it with late-night partying for a few weeks. My roommate and I knew this wouldn’t last, and it didn’t. During finals week, the Carmens were up to their old tricks and stealing the few precious hours of sleep Mike and I had available to us. We moved into phase two.

With our first prank, Mike and I made Carmen and Carmen incite the action. They had to leave their dorm room for the prank to work. If we went down the same path for phase two, they’d eventually catch on. So rather than bring them to the prank, we decided to bring the prank to them.

In 2002, the facebook was a thing—not the digital social media platform we know today, but a hard copy book with headshots, dorm halls, and phone extensions for each student. A facebook was handed out at almost every college in the country, and was the impetus for Mark Zuckerberg developing the platform.

Mike and I went through the Villanova University sophomore facebook and highlighted all the girls who lived in our dorm. Then we called a girl every fifteen minutes for a few hours and read the following script: “Hi (name). How’s it going? This is Carmen from room 201 on the first floor of Good Counsel. Yeah, I just got a care package delivered to my room, but I think they delivered it to the wrong place. It has your name on it. Do you mind coming down to pick it up? I think it’s from your family or something.”

Every fifteen minutes, a new girl would come down to the Carmens’ room, knock on the door, and ask for their care package. Of course, the Carmens had no idea what the girls were talking about, but the two hulks interpreted the girls’ request for “my care package” as a sexual innuendo, resulting in a long series of increasingly awkward exchanges. Mike and I had to muffle our laughs so the Carmens wouldn’t hear us through the ultra-thin dorm walls.

Once each girl left the room, the Carmens, again, both thought the other Carmen was behind the prank.

“You’ve got to stop doing this, Carmen!” said Larger Carmen, and then we heard some thuds and more screaming through the walls, and this is probably my favorite memory from college.

Two years later, just before graduation, Mike and I ran into Larger Carmen at one of the Villanova-area bars. We decided to come clean and told him everything. Carmen said he had no idea what we were talking about.
